I am located in Selby, North Yorkshire in a salon called 'Hair of the Dog with Sparkly Paws'. It is on the industrial site near Selby Recycling Centre and the car garage.
Our address is:
Unit 3 France Industrial Complex, Vivars Way, Canal Road, Selby YO8 8BE
Full instructions and a map can be sent to you to help find me easily!
I cannot give an exact price because every dog is different, I need to take into account the dog's breed, size, coat type, behaviour etc.
Full grooms start at £40
Puppy intros start at £25
De-shedding starts at £20
Bath & brush outs start at £30
Nail trims are £10
I accept cash and card, if you would like to bank transfer I ask that you have sent and I have received the money before you collect your dog after their groom.
This depends on the breed of your dog, and how you like them to be styled.
For long haired or curly coated breeds (e.g. Poodles, Doodles, breed standard grooms) I recommend every 6-8 weeks.
For shedding breeds (e.g. Labradors, Jack Russells, Smooth Haired Dachshunds) I recommend every 8-16 weeks depending on how much they shed!
Regular grooming helps to keep the coat clean and knot free. Each time I groom your dog I am also doing a health check! I'm feeling for any lumps and bumps, noticing if the coat feels different and checking their eyes, ears and mouths to make sure they are looking healthy!
Firstly, if your dog is matted please let me know and I will try and book you in ASAP! Also, I will not judge or lecture you for it. I will give advice on how to avoid this situation again so you and your dog can start afresh!
However, the short answer is “no, I will not brush it out”. A couple of knots in the ears/tail/face can be brushed out but, if your dog is matted, I am afraid the coat will have to go very short. This is not me being lazy, this is me doing what is best for your dog. The reason I will shave the coat short is because it is damaged. Even if I did spend hours brushing it all out, it would knot back up straight away. I want the experience to be as painless and stress free as possible for your dog. If I am constantly pulling and tugging a brush through your dog’s coat for hours, they are not going to have the best time.
I do not want to hurt your dog – matting can be painful for them, and I want to get that hair off as easily and safely as possible.
There is an extra charge of £5+ for severely matted dogs due to the wear and tear on my equipment.
This all depends on your breed of dog and what haircut they are having!
A de-shed on a Smooth Haired Dachshund can take 30 minutes, but a Cockerpoo with a very long coat can take 2 hours 30!
An average full groom usually takes 1 hour 45 to 2 hours.
Please let me know if your dog has been sick or had diarrhoea in the last 48 hours so we can reschedule. There are usually other dogs in the salon (including our own) and we don't want the germs to spread. Also, your dog won't really want to be groomed if they are feeling under the weather (we would rather stay in bed as well when we are ill!)
Not a problem! Please let me know what it is they are nervous about (if it is other dogs or people I can find quieter times when it will just be us in the salon).
If your dog does not enjoy being groomed please let me know. I am still very happy to groom them (and I do groom a few dogs who would like to eat me rather than their treats!). By knowing what quirks your dog has it means I can keep us both safe.
I don't encourage owners to stay whilst I am grooming. The reason for this is that your dog can get distracted by wanting you to be with them and can jump around on the table. I am using sharp tools on your dog and if you say something or do something that distracts them I don't want an accident to happen. I am very happy to send you photos/ videos during the groom so you can keep an eye on them, but it is better that you aren't there - see it as having a couple of hours to yourself!
I do not check vaccination cards as it is personal choice. However, I would make sure that they have had their puppy vaccinations and are healthy as there are other dogs in the salon (including our own personal dogs).
Not a problem! I book in nail trims at the beginning or end of my day so that every dog has their own appointent time.
I recommend getting your puppy booked in as soon as they have had all their vaccinations, this means we can get them used to the process. It can be scary for puppies (and their owners) to go to a strange place and be left, but it is important that they get used to the sounds and smells of me and the salon! For a puppy's first haircut it all depends on how they react to the clippers being near them. If they aren't bothered by the noise and feel of the clippers and you do want some length taking off, I am happy to do this - but only if your puppy is ok with me doing it.
Please let me know if you think your dog might have fleas! Fleas can jump up to 30cm and if there are fleas in the salon this effects everyone's day as dogs will have to be cancelled and rescheduled so we can 'flea bomb' the salon. If your dog does come into the salon with fleas there will be an extra charge of £10+ to cover the cost of disinfecting the salon.
If your dog has a tick it is fine to bring them in as usuaI as I can remove the tick safely and kill it.
Please, please make an appointment! I work 1-2-1 with dogs so they get my full attention, I do not want to leave them or get distracted!
If you want to come in to just have a chat that is fine, but please ask for a time to visit so you can also have my full attention!
